President Javier Milei will embark on another visit to the United States with a crowded agenda: the United Nations General Assembly, economic conferences, meetings with business leaders, conversations with academics and a distinction known as Ohev Yisrael. Everything may fit inside the diplomatic suitcase, although not everything travels on the same institutional passport.
The award will be presented during an event scheduled at Yeshiva Darchei Torah, a private Orthodox Jewish educational institution in New York. Its name may be translated approximately as “one who loves Israel” or “a friend of Israel,” and it is intended to recognise the Argentine president’s steadfast support for the State of Israel.
So far, those are the facts. The necessary clarification begins when the news release describes the distinction as being granted by the “international Jewish community.” Such a community is not a single organisation, has no universal leadership and maintains no central office authorised to distribute certificates on behalf of every Jewish person on the planet.
It is, therefore, a private award. It may carry religious, communal, symbolic or political significance for those presenting it and for the person receiving it, but it is not a decoration bestowed by the State of Israel, the United States or any multilateral institution. Nor does it automatically express the will of a worldwide community as broad, plural and diverse as this one.
That distinction does not diminish the award. It merely places it on the proper shelf. A private organisation has every right to honour Milei, just as the President has every right to accept the tribute. Journalism, for its part, has the less festive duty of reading the label before announcing the arrival of a Crown jewel.
The schedule also presents a carefully arranged succession of interlocutors: liberal economists, representatives of academic institutions, business executives and organisations associated with the promotion of free-market policies. This does not appear to be an improvised diplomatic excursion, but rather a tour designed to reaffirm ideological affinities, cultivate support and place the president before audiences already sympathetic to much of his programme.
The genuinely institutional centrepiece of the journey will be Argentina’s address to the United Nations General Assembly. There, Milei will not speak as the guest of a school, the recipient of a private tribute or a lecturer at an economic forum. He will speak as President of the Nation, representing the Argentine state. That difference is not ornamental either.
Governments tend to wrap their foreign visits in a single sheet of gift paper. A private meeting acquires a diplomatic tone; an ideologically congenial conference is presented as an international forum; and a community medal is transformed, through the alchemy of a press release, into recognition from the entire world. The itinerary remains unchanged, but the narrative receives an upgrade to first class.
Milei will therefore arrive in New York carrying two different mandates. One was granted by Argentine citizens and authorises him to represent the country. The other will be a distinction presented by private individuals who value his support for Israel. Both may coexist honourably, provided no one claims that a private organisation speaks from Mount Sinai on behalf of everyone.
The medal may shine as brightly as its organisers desire. What cannot properly be done is to add, from inside a press office, a state coat of arms it never possessed.
