The massive strike of November 19 left dozens dead and over a hundred injured. Among them, six children. Six. And Shevchuk recalled the other 668 Ukrainian minors who never had the chance to grow up in these four years of terror. Numbers that should, by themselves, dissolve any diplomatic euphemism.
The Major Archbishop of Kyiv, Sviatoslav Shevchuk, did not need to raise his voice. Naming the horror was enough: “This is no longer a war; it is a deliberate massacre of the civilian population.” His words struck those who still insist on reading the Russian invasion as a geopolitical chessboard rather than the human tragedy bleeding out night after night in Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Ukraine commemorated the Holodomor — the man-made famine of 1932–1933, one of the Soviet regime’s most brutal crimes. But this year, the candles lit for the victims cast an unsettling shadow: what memory seeks to prevent is returning in the shape of missiles.
In Kyiv, representatives of the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations prayed together. Zelensky, seated in the front row, listened to the moral weight of a ceremony that stopped being symbolic and turned into a warning. Beside him, religious leaders repeated the shared plea: stop the aggressor before history completes its tragic circle.
“Today it is crucial to stop the murderous hand of the Russian aggressor,” emphasized Hadil, speaking on behalf of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. Not a rhetorical flourish: a reminder that memory without action is merely well-mannered mourning.
Ukraine does not grieve only for its past. It grieves so that no more names must be added. And every missile that falls on civilians confirms what Shevchuk stated with clarity: there are moments when humanity must speak out, even if the world pretends not to listen.
The Holodomor is remembered so that it never happens again. But the rain of missiles shows that, for some, history remains a manual of repetition.
And Ukraine once again pays the price.
