🇬🇧 Buzzes that Could Ignite War

Putin Tests NATO with Drone Attack on Poland

Europe’s night sky turned into a battlefield as a wave of Russian drones crossed Polish airspace en route to Ukraine, triggering NATO’s immediate response. Polish, Dutch and Italian jets scrambled to intercept more than a dozen aircraft that violated Poland’s skies, a frontline member of the Alliance.

The Attack

Prime Minister Donald Tusk denounced a “large-scale provocation” after 19 Russian drones crossed Polish territory. A house in western Poland lost its roof after being hit by a drone, though no casualties were reported. The episode marks the most serious clash between Moscow and NATO since the start of the Ukraine war in 2022.

Citizens were told to stay indoors as Dutch F-35s and Italian aircraft joined Poland’s defense efforts.

Diplomatic Escalation

Warsaw formally requested the activation of Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty, which allows consultations when a member feels its security or territorial integrity is under threat. “This is not only a war for Ukrainians. It is a confrontation Russia has declared against the entire free world,” Tusk told Parliament.

He warned the situation is “the most dangerous since the Second World War” and that the prospect of a wider conflict “has never been closer.”

European Reactions

  • France: Macron called the drone incursion “unacceptable.”
  • Finland: Stubb highlighted the “gravity of the moment.”
  • Lithuania: Nauseda accused Moscow of “deliberately expanding aggression.”
  • Latvia: Rinkēvičs said the incident proves the war “affects us directly.”
  • Czech Republic: Fiala said Putin “is systematically testing the limits.”
  • Ireland: Martin called it a “reckless and unprecedented act.”

The Kremlin’s Calculation

Analysts view the episode as a deliberate move by Putin to probe NATO’s military and political reflexes. With little room for error, a single drone hitting a civilian area could have triggered an uncontrollable escalation.

Belarus, an Awkward Ally

Belarus claimed it shot down drones over its own airspace, without clarifying whether they were Russian or Ukrainian, but said it had warned Poland of suspicious trajectories.

What Next?

NATO convenes in Brussels for emergency talks. While Article 5 – the mutual defense clause – has not yet been mentioned, Europe finds itself in uncharted waters not seen since the Cold War.
